The National Museum (I)

The National Museum situated on Pyi Road, Yangon is a five-storey building and showrooms are divided into 14 compartments. On the ground floor, there are three showrooms: namely, Myanmar epigraphy and calligraphy showroom, Lion Throne Room and Yadanabon Period showroom.

In Myanmar epigraphy and calligraphy showroom, the chart Myanmar alphabet, vowels and numbers, evidence of Myanmar calligraphy from various periods and handwriting script of writers in the 20th Century A.D are displayed. You can see the stone vessels with Pyu inscriptions from the 1st to 9th century A.D.

In Thihathana Palin or Lion Throne Room, eight kinds of thrones in miniature and the Lion Throne of Yandabon period are displayed. The Lion Throne of over 180 years is made of Yamenay hardwood, adorned by lion figures at the base. The throne was kept at the Hluttaw, the council of Advisors and used by the King when for handing down judgement.

In the Yadanabon period showroom, the 19th century A.D royal costumes and attire, furniture and regalia are exhibited. You can observe here the palanquin of King Thibaw’s Sayadaw with its gilded three-tier top.

The National Museum is indeed informative and a show case on the life and history of Myanmar nationals that can satisfy any inquisitive visitor.
