Myaing Hay Wun Elephant Camp

Today, ecotourism is popular throughout the world. Myanmar is also undertaking to promote ecotourism. Myaing-Hay-Wun elephant camp, run by the Ministry of Forests, as an ecotourist destination, is just 72.5 miles out of Yangon. To reach the camp, the trip can be made by car, first 60 miles along the Yangon-Pyay highway up to Hpa-Lon in Taikkyi township, and then another 12.5 miles east up to Myaing-Hay-Wun in the Bago Yoma mountain range.

Myaing-Hay-Wun offers unspoilt natural forests and a glimpse of daily routine of elephant keeping. U Saw James Klowah, manager of the Timber Enterprise, is in-charge of the camp. He explained some interesting points of the camp.

The camp conducts elephant joy-rides and demonstration of timber extraction with elephants. Elephants performed towing, pushing down the slope and negotiating the creek to extract the logs.

Should one interested in hiking and mountaineering, there is 1,228 ft high Seindaung hill, 15 miles from the camp, where a one-night stop expedition can be arranged. About 5 miles from the camp, there is a swampy lake named La-har-ma-nge that is usually frequented by migratory birds in winter. Bird watching can be arranged for visitors in winter.

There are 5 two-room lodgings designed in Myanmar style that can accommodate visitors.Myaing-Hay-Wun is not far from Yangon and accessible by car. One can escape the stress of urban life and relax at Myaing-Hay-Wun elephant camp. So Myaing-Hay-Wun welcomes each and everyone!
