Breeding of Mythun
+

Chin State is located in the north-west of Myanmar stretching from North to South over 300 miles by 100 miles. Chin State is a mountainous region and terrace cultivation, shifting and high-land farming are found. Every house breeds cattle, pigs, poultry and Mythun, which is home to Chin Hills only. Mythun is an essential item of all ritual offerings and social occasions for the Chin nationals. Nows, Mythun species can be found in large numbers only in Bhuton and Myanmar. As Mythun can be successfully bred in any region of Chin State, farmers can undertake breeding side by side with agriculture.

One of the Mythun breeder said,

“In our Chin State, Mythun species are getting endangered and we have to breed more to replenish stock. At age 3, a Mythun can give birth and multiply to 15 to 20 in its entire life. You can’t make them work. They are bred only for meat. But if you cross breed with ordinary species, the product is a hard-working animal. The females which result from cross-breeding yield more milk and provide meat that is lean and tasty.”

Breeding of Mythun is one which all farmers can take up and when more and more Mythuns are systematically bred by every house hold, Chin State will one day, emerge as the ‘ World’s best Mythun Ranch. ‘
