Greening Wrok in NahtogyiTownship

Nahtogyi Township is situated is Myingyun Distict, Mandalay Division with an area of 481.2 square miles. Today, we will present the greening work to undertaking in this arid region of central Myanmar.

There are over 18 thousand acres of forests, nearly 300 thousand cultivated land and over 3 thousand acres of other uncultivated area in Nahtogyi Township. In this township, there are 1184 acre-wide Taungphelar Reserve forest and altogether 9240 acre-wide three "out of bound" forest namely, Sekhingyi, Minson Taung and Sckkyartaung forests.

In 1994, Forest Department carried out Nine Districts Greening Project in this township and Arid Zone Greening Department has taken responsibility for this work since 1997.

To implement the greening work in the township, four point programme is laid down. The programme comprises setting up forest plantations, conservation of remnant natural forests, use of other fuel to substitute firewood and taking measures for obtaining water.
During the period between 1994 and 1999, 1780 acres of forest plantations are cultivated with Yuclip, neem and shar trees.
This is Shauttawyoo Nursery, which is nursing 150 thousand saplings to be planted is new forests. In 1998, 500 acres of remnant natural forest, were conserved. In this remnant natural forest, you can see Thanakha trees among others.
In order to encourage the use of other fuel instead of firewood, Ngahtogyi Township Peace and Development Council distributed 50 thousand briquettes and 700 stoves in 1997-98.

To obtain sufficient water, two ponds and one tube-well were dug in 1998- 99 fiscal year in Nahtogyi Township.This is the drinking water pond of Myinthayar village. We presented the achievement of Arid Zone Greening Department of Ministry of Forestry for Nahtogyi Township greening project.
