The Wonderful Peikchin Ravine

Peikchin Hmyaung Maha Nadamu cave is situated near Wet-Wun village 12 miles east of Pyin Oo Lwin.

The cave is widely known in the country for the many historical images of the Lord Buddha it enshrines. According to the stone inscriptions of the region, the ravine was formed about 230 to 310 million years ago, and its name is derived from the luxuriant long pepper vine, Peikchin in the vernacular, thick enough to prevent sunlight from penetrating, that stands at its mouth. The cave itself is 20 feet wide at its entrance, 1600 feet long and 720 feet from the floor to the roof.

In the cool interior of this great ancient cave are images after venerable images of the Lord Buddha for any devotee to venerate and pay obeisance to, all set amidst the many spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. Added to this beauty is the spring within the cave itself, cool and limpid, its smooth surface mirroring all that is round and above it.

The panorama itself is breathtakingly scenic and any devotee paying a visit to this great cave may enjoy not only the benefit of doing obeisance to the Lord Buddha but also the wonderful experience of appreciating the beauty of nature within a cave.
