The ostrich is the biggest existing bird. The ostrich is considered wildlife, which makes them very strong and not prone to most diseases. Myanma Farms Enterprise of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is implementing a one-year pilot project for breeding ostriches in Bago, 50 miles north of Yangon.

That is aim in object while we are here raising this ostriches. So whether this ostrich bird can survive in our country and can be developed as a commercial farming skill. At the present time our aim is to raise up to the breeding may be coming next year. We are expecting to breed to get some other ostrich young bird. We got it from Malaysia. That is a private company, PBSN Holding Limited. They give as a gift twenty birds. They arrived here last year 2002 10^th October received 20 young birds. At the age of eight weeks. So at the time, on the arrival time round about very small young. Minimum body weight is may be 2.4 kilo and maximum body weight is round about 4 kilo, their age over 10 months, let see 11 months and their weight approximately 70 kilo and may be high over. When they extend their neck may be up to the head over 7 ft long. However we have a very poor knowledge, we can as much as we can, we manage as much as we can. So, veterinarian of our Myanma Farms Enterprise care, raise and manage them you see that, you know the present state. Now these nine ostriches are very strong and very growing well and very healthy now is a very healthy condition now. We however they are so many you know what we called the management guide line in the literature. So now we feeding broiler ration, chicken broiler ration. And also the green feed. So let see now they are having, eating may be round about 3.3 kilogram. I like to explain as much to my very little knowledge about this ostrich behaviour and character. Their origin is really from Africa. So really they are wild bird but can’t fly, can run up to the 70 miles/hour. It is a very strange wonderful, very mysterious creature. And when they become a domesticated in Africa.

The man raise as a commercial basic farming because of their wonderful meat, ret meat. Let see very low cholesterol and no fat and protein is high level. So mostly the western people prefer to eat like this meat, look like the pork, look like the fish, look like the chicken. So this bird meat now that is a in the literature round about US$10 per one kilo. And also their skin sell high one square-feet cost about 30 to 40 US$ may be expensive than the crocodile skin. And their feather and the other parts can be used as cosmetic, as a chemical and computer manufacturing, all of this bird can be used can be applied after processing the time. Their life span is a minimum is about 70 years may be up to the 100 years we can expected.

Myanmar is the perfect place for breeding ostriches in terms of climate, land and other factors. It has also planned to build an amusement park in Bago where they intend to hold ostrich running contest, ostrich riding and ostrich-drawn carts as an attraction for the tourists as well as the locals.
