Mogok, the Ruby Land

Mogok, a town in Central Myanmar, is Myanmar in Mandalay Division, is renowned for producing the world’s best grade of rubies and other precious and semi-precious gems. It is popularly known to the Myanmar people as the "Ruby Land". It lies on the northwest and of the Shan Plateau and its elevation is approximately 3,800 feet above sea level. Its geological age is estimated at over 500 million years.

In Mogok, depending on one’s luck, a find of just one gem of superb quality, can make a person rich overnight . So, many people with some money to invest come to Mogok to engage in gem exploration and mining. As a result Mogok has a large migrant population and is a lively and bustling town. At one time the mining enterprise was a state enterprise. But since the opening up of the economy the Government has encouraged local entrepreneurs to form joint venture and limited companies to undertake exploration, mining, and trade gems.

Mining, whether of diamonds, gold, silver, gems or other ores, is a strenuous and even dangerous job. Mining for precious gems like rubies, sapphires and other gems is the same, not a very glamorous job. But the products with such scintillating colours and beautiful facts enhance glamour in the wearer of jewellery set with these beautiful gems. They stir the human heart and bring forth a desire to possess these beautiful items. And Mogok fullills this human desire.

The population of Mogok consists of the Shan, Bama, Danu, Lishaw, Palaung and Sino Shan ethnic races. The principal occupations are gem mining, lapidary work, gem trade and brokerage and gold smithing. The inhabitants are mostly Buddhists. Mogok, the ruby land with its treasure trove of rubies, sapphires and many precious gems beckons visitors warmly. It is indeed a place worth visiting.
