Pindaya is a town situated 3,880 above sea level on a plain located beteween Shan mountain ranges in Myanmar.

What makes tranquil and beautiful Pindaya famous both at home and abroad is the cavern situated in the hill above the town. You will also be amazed by the enormous girth of the more than two-hundred years of old Nyaung Pennai trees growing in the area.

We, Myanmars take delight in adorning our environs with the beauty of nature. We are also able to live harmoniously with nature. In addition, we put to good use what nature has bestowed on us. One instance is the production of paper from the bark of the mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera). This kind of paper is popularly known in Myanmar as Shan paper.

The bark of the mulberry is mixed with a small amount of lime and plenty of ashes, boiled and pounded. Then the mixture is placed in a bamboo container and stirred.

It is stirred repeatedly to soften the fibre. It is then poured into the cotton sieve in a tray with a frame and the pieces of fibre are spread all over the tray. An unusual feature is the addition of leaves, small twigs, flowers and petals found in the environment. Then the water is drained off carefully.

Next the tray of mixture is dried in the Sun. After about fifteen minutes, beautiful sheets of Shan paper are ready to be used. It is amazing how the sprigs of flowers and leaves used to decorate Shan paper are bound with pieces of bamboo, you get a souvenir book. You can also make parasols from Shan paper.

After the final touch you get a shade-providing parasol with which you can beautify yourself!
