Preservation of Myanmar Star Tortoise

The Ministry of Forestry has issued a policy of forestry stating that environmental conservation is vital importance. For implementation of the policy, Forestry Department has jointly coordinated with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to preserve and breed turtles of Myanmar. There are 31 species of turtles including 5 species of sea tortoise, 22 species of fresh water tortoise and 4 species of land tortoise in Myanmar. Those of Myanmar Star Tortoise, Rakhine Forest Turtle, Myanmar Roofed Turtle, Myanmar Eyed Turtle, Myanmar Flap-shell Turtle, and Myanmar Peacock Soft-shell Turtle are rare species and can only be found in Myanmar.

In fact, Myanmar Star tortoise includes inland tortoise group. They inhabit in the forests of Than, Dahut, Shar and Indine in Central Myanmar and tropical zones. Depending on the place they dwell, the tortoises are varied in names such as star tortoise, spotted tortoise, flower tortoise, gold tortoise, angle tortoise, seashore tortoise and spider tortoise. They live on soft grass, mushroom, Mahlwapwint and Thakhutpwint in Myanmar. During the day they hide themselves in bushes and grass but come out in the evening and at night for food. They spoon only once a year and lay 15 eggs. The Department of Forestry has established protection of Myanmar Star tortoise in Shwe Sattaw Reserve Forest in Minbu Township and Min Zone Taung Reserve Forest in Nahtoegyi Township.

Nyaung Oo Township is carrying out the breeding of star tortoise. Incubation of Star tortoise is carrying out with the technology from Griffin Enterprise Limited of Japan. The tortoise breeds in the first group are kept for breading and the rests are released into the forests for natural reproducing. Myanmar is implementing preservation of Star tortoise as well as conservation of environment.
