Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Lighting Festival
(Lighting Procession Contest)

Taunggyi Tazaungdaing is filled with festive movements day and night to preserve this lovely tradition. Tazaungdaing Lighting Festival is held annually and it is held in competition. The procession starts from the central part to the Sulamuni Lawkachantha Pagoda hill. On the full moon day of Tazaungmon, boys and girls and damsels from nine wards in the whole town took part in it. Each team comprises 100 to 500 members.

Along the procession, you can also find that PaO damsels wearing stick collars and old ladies wearing wide collars. As the procession takes place on the full-moon day of Tazaungmon, street lights are put up so that one can see the whole procession vividly in the night. They are also decorated compares with cultural troupes depicting Buddhaw Lazi on the way. The procession lights is swayed with candles, oil lamps, multi-colored lantern and owned electric lights.

On the way, there are four pandols where judges are awaiting to a worth points to the tapes, timely arrival, artistic creation, tradition model dress and most important of all keeping the lights throughout which are points considered in the contest.

After paying homage to the Sulamuni Lawkachantha Pagoda by turning thrice, it is a beautiful custom which can be found in Taunggyi which is unforgettable for every visitor.
