U Pain Bridge

In Mandalay Division, to the south of Mandalay, is the oldest city of Amarapura. Near Amarapura is a great lake named Taungthaman. There is a wooden bridge built across the lake. It is well known as the U Pain Bridge.

It was during the rein of the ninth King of the Konbaung dynasty, King Bagan that the town official named U Pain dedicated this bridge.

The bridge, the longest teak bridge of its kind in the World was constructed in 1849 and completed in 1851. All the plants and timber poles from the dismantled houses in Sagaing and Innwa (Ava) were used for its construction. It has three quarters of a mile in length and has 1 thousand and 86 poles, 4 hundred and 82 squares.

The Taungthaman lake and U Pain Bridge are a perfect accommodation of scenic beauty. The bridge itself shall long remain a historic legacy the past.
