Wakema Bridge

Nowadays, the government is not only extending new Union Highways connecting east and west, and south and north but also is opening bridges one after another all over the country. In building bridges in the Ayeyawady Division which has many rivers and creeks, 36 bridges each of which is over 180ft long have been built. Wakema Bridge is 37th bridge which was opened on 5th January 2003.

It is being built linking Ywale ward on the east bank of river in Wakema and Htawkanut ward on the west bank. The upper structure of the main bridge is a bailey suspension bridge. The upper structure of the approach bridge is of reinforced concrete beam and concrete floor. The lower structure was built of reinforced concrete bole piles and reinforced concrete piles. The main bailey suspension bridge is 600 ft long; the approach road on the bank on Yangon side is 1,260ft long and the one on Wakema bank is 1,160ft long totally 3,020 ft long. The bridge has a 24ft motor way and four feet pedestrian lanes on each side. The bridge can withstand 60 tons of loads.

Roads and bridges are the strength of a nation. The government is building not only roads throughout the length and breadth of the nation as a network but also the bridges.
