Yangon Zoological Garden has been inaugurated since 1906. Nowadays, it has an area of 69.25 acres. It is a World class zoo where one may observe a collection of animals habitat to Myanmar as well as the World over.

There are 59 species of animals, 63 species of birds, 17 species of reptiles on the fauna side. On the flora side, there are over 15,000 trees and plants.

There are two types of Tapir, one found in South America and the other in South East Asia. The coat of the Asian (Malayan Tapir) is unmistakable. The front and hide parts and legs are black with the middle part white. The nose is extended as a short proboscis. They are nocturnal animals. Nearby water is necessity for this species, which likes to remain submerged for hours. It feeds on aquatic plants and browse on leaves and twigs of shrubs.

Hog deer can be found in localities. Myanmar, in suitable localities, Males carry antlers 12-15 inches long; these are shed annually in April. Hog Deer inhabit grassy areas near streams and rivers and in the tidal forests.

Yangon Zoological Garden is run with the aims and objectives of facilitating recreation for the public, educating the public on conservation and research awareness, facilitating student researchers on Zoology and Botany, and lastly but not the least facilitating the breeding of rare and endangered species.
